Campaign of the Month: September 2014
The Sekan, also called the “Dwellers”, are remnants of the Deltans who resisted the Reconquista and the influence of Terran society. Though most now formally recognize the governmental authority of the Federal Commonwealth, they keep to remote desert sanctuaries on Illiyun, spurning the noise and confusion of large cities and the corrupt influence of politicians and corporate executives.
Owing to their generally remote nature, the Sekan have developed a highly community-based familial structure, which is referred to as a Clan. Children are granted a surname from their birth parents and are cared for by them until they are old enough to be raised communally, usually between the ages of 3-5. From that point on, children are considered “part of the community” and begin to work with and learn from all other members of the Clan, attending school or working physically, depending on which adult or family is currently responsible for them. Once children begin to develop certain aptitudes, usually between the ages of 13-16, they are often apprenticed to a certain skill trainer in addition to their normal responsibilities. On occasion, a Clan may perform an exchange of people with another Clan, to ensure skills are not lost, as well as to help maintain goodwill and diversity among bloodlines.
Though individual Clans are often secluded, they hold gatherings every few years to perform trades and discuss events or plan for the future. It is during these times that many formal rites are performed, such as acknowledgement of adulthood of children, or festivals promoting an auspicious trade, or awarding service. Festivals such as these are one of the few times non-Sekan are openly welcomed into a Clan space, and they serve as popular destinations for tourists and locals alike.
